Our founder once bought a strong machine with a strong GPU. It turned out the heavy workloads came about twice a year. The rest of the time, a simple, cheap computer would have done the job. Renting the power for those few months would have been far more profitable.

That's not unusual. Professional workstations keep getting more expensive, and even in the best case people use them 8 to 10 hours a day. At rental prices, buying one means paying for around 8 years of work upfront. Within about 5 years technology moves on and most teams replace their hardware anyway.

Renting should be the obvious answer, but big data centers are either fully booked on GPU compute or charge prices that small teams can't justify.
